Herrljunga municipality first in Sweden with a utility-scale solar guide

2021-01-25

Herrljunga municipality in south-western Sweden has been part of a case study of so-called utility-scale solar guides together with the local electricity distribution system operator and the Division of Civil Engineering and Built Environment. On their website the municipality describe the collaboration with our thesis workers Oskar Lindberg, now postgraduate student at the division, and Alfred Birging.

In the case study for Herrljunga, Oskar and Alfred developed and applied a GIS-based method in which available land areas are mapped and combined with electricity network data to find the most suitable locations for solar parks. The methodology is generally applicable and can be used by any municipality or grid owner. Herrljunga municipality's news article about the project can be read in its entirety here.

The case study is part of a research project financed by the Swedish Energy Agency that will be finalized in 2021.

The results are presented in detail in Oskar's and Alfred's master thesis and in a scientific paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Applied Energy.
