Life-cycle assessments on Maintenance and Renovation for Sustainable built heritage
Not always is deep renovation the best energy-retrofitting strategy for historic buildings. Constant care and long-term maintenance are generally considered more sustainable and appropriate for preserving their values. Nevertheless, there is a gap in the research on the energy-efficiency and sustainability of built heritage maintenance and a need for assessing it properly in terms of cultural values, energy, carbon footprint and costs from a life-cycle perspective. The project uses life cycle assessment methods to compare different strategies of renovation and maintenance of historic residential buildings. The project aims to contribute to an increased understanding of how energy-efficiency measures can be integrated within built heritage maintenance, turning it into a coherent and continuous process of energy retrofitting. The target groups are owners and managers of historic residential buildings and stocks, such as home owners, real estate companies and co-operative housing association.
